Meet the Developer – Bob

Hello! You may know me as one of the people slinging pixels on your website. I’m Bob Baker, one of the developers at Curious Minds. Yes, that is my real name.

Computer Roots

When I was in 7th grade, I knew exactly what I wanted to do as a career. I wanted to be a draftsman. I really enjoyed drawing blueprints with pencil on paper. During high school I learned how to use CAD (Computer Aided Design/Drafting) software, like AutoCad. I confirmed that drafting was in my future, but definitely on a computer. I went to college and got my degree in CAD engineering. While in college, I became very interested in computers, websites, and how they worked. After graduation, I worked as a CAD operator for over 14 years.

I played around with HTML and CSS as often as I could. I started building very simple static websites. Then, I joined an online EA Sports NHL franchise gaming league, and offered an attempt to create a membership system for the league website. This catapulted me into using databases and PHP to make a membership system, a dashboard with team standings, schedule, and game results with box scores and layer stats. At my last job as a CAD operator, there were times when I had very little drafting to do. So, with my boss’ permission, I took on a project of making a website where we could keep track of all our construction projects and store the drawings, contracts, customer data, etc. By the time that job ran its course, I had been there for more than nine years. But I was more and more interested in web development, and applied for a job as a web developer.

A New Start

My first job as a developer had a very slow start. I knew a lot less than I thought, but I quickly gained traction and learned a great deal in my first 2-4 weeks. I became the lead creative designer and, after a little more than a year, was more relied upon for my programming skills. Eventually, I was the lead on a very large project that proved to be quite successful and gave our clients more options and control over their website content. From there, I’ve worked at a few other companies in both a design and programming capacity. This eventually led me to Curious Minds, where I’m excited to be part of an incredible team of developers.

They say that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, but I definitely work. There are challenges for sure, but I love the challenge of finding solutions to problems. I love being able to work on these challenges and delivering a usable interface, or automated feature that meets or exceeds the expectations of our clients. I love that if I get stuck with a solution, I know my colleagues are so willing to help me out. So yes, it’s work, but it’s a work that I fully enjoy.

Mashing Keyboards and Thrashing Chords

Outside of work, I’ve been very happily married for 21 years to my best friend, who thought I was giving her a fake name when we first met. I’m the proud father of five children, all boys. They are amazing individuals, each with incredible talents.

I’m originally from Oswego NY, a small city on Lake Ontario just outside of Syracuse. Shortly after I met my wife, I moved to the Hudson Valley, where I’ve lived for 22 years. It’s a beautiful area with a lot to offer a family like ours. We have two dogs (Lily and Archimedes), and two bunnies (Carmen and Moriarty).

I’m an avid metalhead. When I’m mashing the keyboard, I’m usually listening to bands like Lamb of God, Unearth, August Burns Red, Revocation, and my oldest son’s band, Sledge Wolf. Music has always been a big part of our lives. I’ve played bass guitar since I was 13 years old, and have played in a handful of bands ranging from alternative rock, to hardcore, to metal.
